When a student falls asleep in class math class they get may get into trouble with the teacher or worse-- things may get thrown at them. When a student falls asleep in my yoga class however, things are a little different.
I have a student who started coming to my weekly restorative class to try and calm her mind and find some peace and relaxation. Last week she was restless, annoyed with her body and not able to 'let go'. She struggled with the physical postures and with just 'being'. Today, she came into the classroom and seemed much the same...distracted, jittery almost.
After ten minutes of pranayama and a few restorative, supported postures she fell asleep. As a yoga teacher, this is the highest form of compliment. Yes, she may have had a less than restful sleep. Yes, she may have needed a nap. BUT (and this is the key part for me) she was able to release and let go enough to fall asleep on the mat. She felt comfortable enough to let her defenses down and just be. It was an honor to watch her.
When was the last time you were able to let go enough, turn off enough to fall asleep in yoga? Don't you wish that blissful state could be yours more often? I know I do.
Just a yoga teacher. Doing my thing.
