I was humbled and honored when my student asked me to teach a class for her, her daughter, and some of her daughters friends. Her daughter has something called Supra Ventricular Tachycardia, which in laymen's terms is (at times) a very rapid heart beat. It is not considered to be life threatening.
Let me tell you something, when your baby is sick or hurt or dealing with any illness it threatens your sanity. You can believe that.
Her daughter is going in for a procedure that will (hopefully) fix the issue and there is some understandable nervousness around this.
My student asked me to teach a class to help her cope with her emotions around this procedure and to help her daughter as well.
I have to say that deciding to give your daughter a yoga class designed to help her find strength and peace and healing and an open heart is brilliant...I am not sure I would have thought of that for my own kids (and, as you know, I am a yoga teacher)
Earlier this year when my own child was diagnosed with an auto immune disease, I did not seek out a yoga teacher, I did not take her to my yoga classes. I did eventually begin to re-introduce yoga and meditation concepts to her but it took some time and some processing and I have still not convinced my darling teenager it is a good thing for her. Its a process...it will come.
As moms we don't always know what the 'right' thing is. And even if we do know we don't always do the 'right' thing. I can't say for sure but I think this is one of those times where this mom knew in her heart what the right thing was and she did it. Way to go yoga mama.
Our hearts are a powerful energy center. Love, compassion, gratitude, understanding, true knowing...these things are all cultivated in our heart centers. If we can get quiet and still what do our hearts tell us? How much can we learn from listening? How much LOVE can we cultivate just by listening?
Take 20 breaths right now and in those 20 breaths get very quiet and still and listen to your heart.

Is this what you are afraid of? Okay, so seriously, you know me....does this look like something I would ask you to do? Yeah, not really- right?
Here are my top 5 reasons why you might enjoy partner yoga if you gave it a try. Also known as "why you should not be afraid of partner yoga.
1. You really love it when I give adjustments in class (and frankly, you think I don’t do it enough). Well, this class will be partly about how to give and recieve adjustments.
2. You enjoy using props of any kind for any reason. Guess what! In Partner yoga you get to use a real live person as your prop. Cool huh?
3. You are working on awareness of any kind. Mental, physical, emotional. Connecting with another person is a very powerful tool in creating deeper awareness. And if your partner is someone you are close to you will also be deepening your connection with them.
4. You like to laugh and don't mind a little bit of talking in yoga. Is yoga class too serious for you? Are okay with a little bit of chit chat? Well then, Partner Yoga might be just what you are looking for! Now, if you get too Chatty I may have to use my 'let's everyone close your eyes.... and your mouth line :) "
5. You have been dying to try that thing where you are hanging upside down on your partner’s feet, OR the one where you are doing a hand stand on their feet while they are in shoulder stand!!!....yeah, if that is what you want....this may not be the class for you!
I hope you will step outside of that box that comforts and at times confines and try this class. February 16th at 4:00p.m $25 per couple. Let me know if you need help finding a partner.
First let me say a big thank you to all of
you who have supported me over the last year. Your smiling faces and consistent
presence are my bread and butter! Speaking of bread and butter....who had way
too much of both this last week?? More on this later!
Although I will be
on vacation until the 7th of January that does not mean that you cannot still
practice yoga. A personal practice is what helps us get to the heart of what
yoga really is. Without the distraction of the noise in the building, the
temperature of the room, the student next to you breathing just a little too
loud, you can find the path to your very quiet and very still center. Even if
you are not actually practicing asana (the postures) you can still practice
yoga. Breath by breath.
Here are some ideas about how to bring yoga
into your daily life:
Before you get out of bed in the morning lay in savasana and
gently scan each part of your body. Notice how you feel from the soles of the
feet through the crown of your head.
Be thankful for any communication your body is providing – even if it is
telling you something is not right. When we are willing to listen to our bodies
we can take care of it and perhaps avoid illness and
Balance in tree for just a moment on each side before doing the
we take a moment to balance the body we are actually balancing our nervous
system and are able to face all those things in life that threaten to throw us
off balance. And then while you do the dishes thank each and every dish for
feeding someone you love.
Try the falling out breath if you are stuck in traffic or at the
airport or if your great Aunt Mary is telling you for the one hundredth time
about her cats. Breath a normal inhalation through the nose and let the breath
come out as if you are blowing through a straw or blowing out candles or like a
sigh….but don’t sigh with Great Aunt Mary…she might misinterpret it as
Teach your visiting house guests sun salutations. Or a few
forward fold. Forward folds are good for letting things go. Which is helpful
when you are a house guest or have a few of your own.
Before going to bed take
a moment to remember all that you are thankful for. Sit in meditation for
10-20 minutes and allow the day to fall away until all that remains is the quiet
rhythm of your breath and the steady beating of your
Now….back to the too much bread and
butter….you thought I forgot- didn’t
Here are some gentle suggestions for
finding balance at the table. Try drinking more water than alcohol. In
addition to more water try drinking a big glass of water before each meal. Try
avoiding milk and bread for one day….or one meal. If you have a juicer try
drinking your breakfast. My favorite is carrot, apple, beet, ginger juice. And my personal favorite …take a walk
after dinner and enjoy the beautiful winter sky.
Thank you for you!
I appreciate each and every one of you and I am looking forward to coming
back to the mat with you on January 7threfreshed and renewed and with
a few new ideas for our classes
